39. Halcyon Digest

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Dreamy album and very pleasant to listen to. It's a little ironic how gentle and soothing "Earthquake" is. The song sounds nothing like it. It's more like being on a sailboat at sea on a calm day.

"Don't Cry" has a great distorted retro sound along with "Revival." These tracks are very reminiscent of the 60s. I love the light strumming and intricate percussion in "Revival." It makes me nostalgic, even though I wasn't even alive in the 60s.

"Memory Boy" has a melody with chimes and tinkling which makes a sound that is luminous with thousands of prisms. Very beautiful. I have to say one of my favorite tracks, "Desire Lines", is utterly resonating. I love the calm resolve of the chorus and the echoing guitars and faint chorals in the background. The guitars kind of remind me of early Interpol. The instrumental ending just blossoms with a repetition that opens and grows. It could just go on forever.

"Basement Scene" takes on a different character that is more in line with the retro feel of the 60s once more. I'm impressed with the musical sensibility of these guys. They are quite young, but they definitely understand how to mix something classic with something new via electronic manipulations.

There's a great steady beat to "Fountain Stairs." I can imagine driving to this one at sunset in a country setting full of golden fields of wheat. "Coronado" has wonderful intricacies of rhythm and even a saxophone. You just never hear that anymore.

"He Would Have Laughed" is nothing short of delightful. These guys are surprisingly mature and sophisticated for their respective ages to be creating music like this.

Needless to say, these songs transport you to places and have the power to invoke a visual. That's what I love best about this album.
