38. Paranoid

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This album rocks it out like the legend that it is. There's not a single bad tune on it. It holds its own and is a timeless rock classic. Kids, don't be afraid of old music. Some of the best music you'll find out there is the older stuff, believe it or not. And really, some of the best stuff now takes from the older stuff for sure.

"War Pigs/Luke's Wall" is amazing. There's some real soul in it. Ozzy's voice is commanding and the guitars just dance in this song. Probably one of my favorite tracks on this album.

"Paranoid" is as good as anything written today. Probably better. There's some real speed and power in this piece. "Planet Caravan" does something different with the distortion of the vocals and taking on a more low key, pensive tone. The intimate thumping rhythms and guitar interlude is very nice. Just a real classy song.

"Iron Man", is the most recognizable of course. Paving the way for metal, this is just the song to do it, and it does it without being corny like so many bands following have done. The vocals match the guitars, syncing them up in a powerfully catchy way. It is one of the rock anthems of the century I think. What makes it so great is that it changes pace between the main chorus and the guitar interlude and then reverts back to the main theme and then shifts once more to a faster paced interlude making way for a much more interesting song than if it had just continued with the same theme and chorus.

"Electric Funeral" is a brooding piece of rock genius. I mean, if it weren't for a song like this, there wouldn't be a Metallica or a Tool. But again, what makes this unique is the shift in pace and tone in the middle of the track.

"Hand of Doom" is excellent. Love the soul in the bass guitars and Ozzy's voice in the beginning of the track. Once again, the track shifts so it's like you're getting 2 tracks in 1. Because of this recurring trend track after track, the album is nothing less than epic.

"Rat Salad" is a short instrumental piece showcasing the prowess of the band's drummer and guitarists, setting up for "Jack the Stripper/Fairies Wear Boots", which is a really cool jam that shouldn't be overlooked.

Awesome album. Makes me feel good listening to it.
