29. Go Away White

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

So in 2008, this 80s gothic rock band gave one last shot at creating one last album, and it turns out, they did a pretty grand job making something contemporary and up-to-date.

"International Bulletproof Talent" stands out because of its ostentatious lyric and rather flashy rock 'n' roll sound. Peter Murphy's deep, emotive voice is gothic sex. His play with pausing between words and finding different ways to sing the same lyric makes the song jump.

"Endless Summer of the Damned" has a very cool beat and sound overall. The heavy bass guitar and the tribal-like thumping of percussion make a very appealing, likable rock song.

"Saved", "The Dog's a Vapour", and "Zikir" bring in the mysterious darkness of goth. There's almost a kind of new age, spiritual, ceremonious vibe to these three songs.

"Mirror Remains" is a great track. Once again, Peter Murphy in a sort of tongue-in-cheek boasting manner at the beginning of the song proclaims himself as marvelous. Then there's an exchange between him and other members of the band remarking on the solo bit in a sort of off-the-cuff manner as he coughs in the background almost as if this is a rehearsal cut.

All in all, I'd say this album is a decent finish to one of music's first and finest gothic rock bands.
