10. The Colour and the Shape

The Colour and the Shape The Colour and the Shape by Foo Fighters
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If it wasn't for this album, I probably wouldn't even be listening to hard rock right now. This album is the quintessential Foo album. I give it a big score because I fell in love with it right off the bat.

Dave Grohl has a way of creating the most catchy songs. "Everlong" is one of the band's greatest hits. The fast tempo combined with the tender lyrics in the song, and Grohl's subdued vocals which find their height and rawness in the chorus, makes for a highly unusual marriage between soft and hard. The fast-paced high hat rolls combined with the haunting melody is what I love best about the song. It's good night-time driving music.

"Monkey Wrench" is just awesome. The guitar riff at the beginning is an upbeat introduction to a song with great punk sensibility. Similarly, "My Poor Brain" and "New Way Home" build upon the use of quiet and relatively subdued moments coupled with Grohl building his vocals to a point where he's eventually screaming in true hard rock fashion.

This is a fantastic sophomore album by the band.

Everything Grohl touches turns to gold. His raw talent, amazing musical knack for finding a likable melody, and his ability to play multiple instruments and write all the content is pretty phenomenal.

I used to listen to this album everyday on the bus going to and from work. It made a huge difference for me in what I later on could listen to. If it wasn't for this band, I wouldn't have ever picked up "Nevermind" or "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols."

Awesome album that has probably saved my life a couple of times.
