34. War

War War by U2
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have to say probably one of my favorite U2 albums ever. I swear I can listen to "New Year's Day" over and over again and never tire of it. There's a certain determined seriousness to the message and the music. It's a powerful song with powerful images conjuring up blood red skies and starting anew.

"Sunday Bloody Sunday" of course is a classic showcasing U2's political consciousness. I think one of the reasons behind the longevity of this band's career lies not only in their excellence in musicianship, but also in their own close-knit brotherhood as band mates and the fact that they didn't fall into the big hair band foppery of the time. Bono has a heartfelt singing voice that is unmatched. It's not so much that it's technically perfect. It's that he candidly sings from a place within that is raw and honest.

"Seconds" has a great sense of timing both lyrically and in the bass riff. I also really like "Drowning Man". It has a beautiful resonance with violins and the strumming of guitars that surges with great emotional depth. "Two Hearts Beat as One" is another really likable one. It's just this awesome love track with intense energy. The way the instruments come together in this song is just right.

It's so amazing to me that while this band was still in its early stages, they were making such sophisticated, wonderful music. Little did they know how big they'd actually get. Even so, early U2 tracks are the best.
