26. Them Crooked Vultures

Them Crooked Vultures Them Crooked Vultures by Them Crooked Vultures
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Mix a little Queens of the Stone Age with the Foo Fighters and Led Zeppelin, and what do you get? This rock supergroup.

I wouldn't say this is the most amazing rock album I've ever heard even though Dave Grohl plays drums, Josh Homme sings, and John Paul Jones plays guitar and piano, but it is lively and entertaining.

"New Fang" has a country rock twang to it with a back and forth jauntiness that makes for a great tune to rock out to. "Dead End Friends" is a very Queens of the Stone Age track. It's almost reminiscent of something on the verge of Middle Eastern.

There are some quick changes of rhythm and speed in "Elephants" that kind of brings up this idea that maybe the guys are playfully jamming with each other in an experimental fashion just to see what they'll come up with. They seem to have really good chemistry and Josh Homme has a sort of carelessly seductive singing style.

"Scumbag Blues" and "Caligulove" have excellent rhythms that just make you want to get up and dance.

Seeing that this collaboration was initiated by Grohl doesn't surprise me, nor do I think it's a bad idea. Bringing three very talented and experienced rock musicians together (one of which is the legendary John Paul Jones) makes for a polished, strong first album.
