Psyence Fiction by UNKLE
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars
Here's a brooding trip-hop album with somber tracks like the entirely instrumental "Unreal" and the electronic and symphonic "Lonely Soul", where Richard Ashcroft takes center stage.
The highlight track would be "Rabbit in Your Headlights" where Thom Yorke sings with his classic meandering, melancholy vocals. I swear, no one holds a note longer at full force than Thom towards the end of this song. It's incredible.
"Getting Ahead In The Lucrative Field of Artist Management" is obviously a joke and doesn't really qualify as a song, but is an entertaining excerpt nonetheless. "Nursery Rhyme / Breather" is probably the most upbeat two-in-one track followed by a more sobering "Celestial Annihilation", a spacey hip hop instrumental mix.
Mike D from the Beastie Boys makes an appearance on the "The Knock", which is slightly corny with the exaggerated "C'mon's", but it's a nice contrast to the rest of the album, which is moodier and colder in sound.
I would say this album is a good one to listen to while settling down to relax or reflect. If you want something electronic but more lively, go with Fatboy Slim.
