There Is Love in You by Four Tet
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Four Tet creates some very interesting, futuristic tunes that are great to zone out to. "Love Cry" has a tribal beat with humming and droning that makes me think of technology ahead of our own time as it sets up for the soul-filled vocal repetition of "love cry." I really like the synth work in this one. One element after another is added gradually building the complexity of the music.
"Circling" is magical. The digital twinkles mixed in with the pure sound of the feminine vocals create a dance that is enchanting and wonderful. "Sing" is a little more traditional as a dance hit. I like the glitchy rhythm and xylophonic effects.
What makes Four Tet's music intriguing is that many of his songs incorporate a mixture of human vocalizations cut in half and mixed with other sections of the same vocalizations to create a blurred, edited result where nothing seems entirely defined or certain.
"This Unfolds" is a sparkly jewel of electronic work with chirping, twinkling, and bell sounds that create an aura of scintillating light.
There's something exotic about "Plastic People." The rhythm includes an electronic effect that emulates a bell sound that reminds me of instruments played in Southeast Asia. Pretty cool.
"She Just Likes to Fight" is contemplative. I like the percussion elements and tings on the triangle. The guitar is a different kind of inclusion from the rest of the album. It's a really lovely piece.
The hidden track is a surprise because it isn't Four Tet. It's Lightspeed Champion singing "There's Nothing Underwater" from his album "Life Is Sweet! Nice to Meet You." Why this song is supposedly on the album, I can't say. Maybe they're friends and he's plugging his buddy's track.
This kind of electronic album is mature and more reflective than the kinds of music you might hear in a dance club. I really like it for that reason.
