50. This Is Happening

This Is Happening This Is Happening by LCD Soundsystem
My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

I love the playfulness of this dance album. There's a Talking Heads quality to a lot of the tracks. James Murphy is really the brains and creativity behind this little gem.

"Dance Yrself Clean" is fabulous. Just the title makes me want to get up and move. I love the electronics and the emotive, sassy feel. "Drunk Girls" sounds distinctly like a 90s track. Murphy is kooky like The B-52s. The lyrics are light and silly. This album is just for fun. It's not meant for anyone listening to come to any grandiose conclusions about life.

"One Touch" has a great little mad scientist laboratory sound for the intro. The pulsing rhythm and corresponding ascending synth along with the ambient static is a fun bit of electro-dance pop you can get amped up for. Murphy's monotonic melody gives me the impression of one funky robot.

"All I Want" is a sweet bit of music that shows us a more tender side to Murphy. The guitar is unusually heavy and Murphy's vocals compete with it, but somehow his gentle crooning manages to win out. Also, the electronic keyboard interlude is wonderful. It goes from dialing to a meandering melody that is charming and a delight to listen to.

"I Can Change" welcomes back the 80s with synths big time, but it doesn't do it in a corny way. Murphy's voice is really likable. He has a gentle way of hitting those high notes. Plus, the tracks on this album are really intelligently produced. All the different elements harmonize and work together in a really smart and appealing way.

"Pow Pow" is crazy fun. This track has a very Talking Heads vibe with Murphy seeming to talk through the song in the most ridiculous manner and then shout out "Pow Pow Pow Pow!" in rhythmic spurts of eccentricity. You're either going to think this song is awesome or completely irritating depending on your tolerance for quirkiness.

"Home" is a jolly little tune. Love it. It's fast and has a great dance beat. I really like the airiness of this song. You can tap your feet, clap, snap, whatever. It brings a smile because it's so open and colorful.

Check out "Throw" too. The high-pitched vocals are too funny.

Excellent dance album with lots going on. The highlight is Murphy's singing voice. He brings us music that is cheerful, upbeat, and wholly original.
