42. The Woods

The Woods The Woods by Sleater-Kinney
My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

It's not often an all girl band blows me away. Sleater-Kinney is one of my favorite all girl bands because they know how to rock it. Not only that, they create a distinctly West Coast punk rock sound. It's a fun in the sun kind of feel. Just listen to "Wilderness."

The powerful trilling vocals give this riot grrrl act a kick that is enjoyably loud and sassy. "What's Mine Is Yours" and "Let's Call It Love" are incredibly sexy songs passionate, feminist, and full of force.

"Jumpers" is pretty rockin' too. It has a great guitar riff and some effects that remind me of The Who. Corin Tucker's vocals just blast me away. She blows you right out of the water. You either love her or hate her. I think that's what makes her great.

"Modern Girl" is a sweet, feel-good tune with its nostalgic harmonica, over-amplified ambience, and hefty percussion which inevitably makes it grow into something bright. "Entertain" has awesomely powerful drumming and reminds me of Bikini Kill - a definite signature riot grrrl piece.

One of my favorite Sleater-Kinney songs is "Rollercoaster". It's just sheer fun. It definitely sounds like a musical chase through an amusement park. The rhythmic elements make this an incredibly fun, smart, and slick little piece of American rock. Love it.
